Season Bee

After four highly fruitful virtual spelling bee contests that saw over two hundred spellers from all over the country take part, and another twelve scoop amazing gift hampers, KNSB is gearing up for a fifth and final contest to be held on December 19th.

In the spirit of the holiday season, the contest will feature the Christmas theme and this means words that the spellers will be tasked to spell will borrow heavily from this worldwide celebrated season.

Word List

Just like in the past contests, spellers will have access to a comprehensive study word list that will, this time, focus mainly on the Christmas season. The study list will be used to guide the spellers on the words that are likely to be asked during the contest and also as a reference guide in their studies.

Virtual propriety

The past virtual contests have gone by without major challenges and most of them, despite a few glitches here and there have been conclusively successful. However, it is always prudent to keep reminding ourselves of the most important details required from us during a virtual sitting.

The contest is conducted exclusively via Zoom, and therefore;

  1. Make sure you have the Zoom app installed on your phone/laptop/desktop before the contest.
  2. Make sure the Zoom app is functional I.e.. Installed and registered.
  3. DO NOT register the app with the child’s email address! Underage email accounts do not work with Zoom. Register the app with an adult’s email address.
  4. Get familiar with Zoom. You can join a practice session to test your audio and webcam, and familiarize yourself with the chat and other controls. Click here to join a test session.
  5. Make sure you have a stable internet connection. KNSB will not be responsible for poor or no internet access on the part of the learner.
  6. Come to class early. Be prepared to join class a few minutes before it starts so you can make sure your audio and video are working.
  7. During Contest:
  • Mute your microphone whenever you’re not talking so as not to add background noise. When you have been given permission to speak, select the Unmute button.
  • Sit upright and make sure your video is turned on at all times. You risk elimination if your video is turned off or do not appear on the screen during the session.
  • Use reactions and chat to participate. When you need to ask a question live, use the raise hand option and/or send a chat message to request permission to speak.
